MatPilot is small. It stands on the work of many people who share theirs for free. Thank you.
Built on Pybricks
MatPilot could not exist without Pybricks, free and open-source software for LEGO® hubs, made by Laurens Valk and David Lechner with contributors around the world. Pybricks does the hard parts; MatPilot adds blocks, robots and mats on top:
- The firmware on your hub is Pybricks. It runs every program and keeps the motors and sensors working.
- Connecting and running use the Pybricks protocol, the same way Pybricks’ own app talks to the hub.
- Every block makes Pybricks Python:
DriveBase,Motor,ColorSensorand the rest are Pybricks’ names. - Pybricks’ compiler turns that Python into the code the hub runs, right in your browser.
Pybricks is free for everyone, and it stays that way through its supporters. If MatPilot helps your team, please sponsor Pybricks on GitHub or on Patreon.

The LDraw Parts Library
The shapes and sizes of LEGO® parts that MatPilot uses to measure a model and draw it in 3D come from the LDraw Parts Library, drawn by volunteers over many years. It is shared under the Creative Commons licences CC BY 4.0 and CC BY 2.0. MatPilot serves part of it unchanged, with its licence files, and a table of every part’s size worked out from it.
BrickLink Studio
BrickLink Studio is the LEGO Group’s free program for building LEGO® models on a computer. MatPilot reads the LDraw files it exports. MatPilot is not made by BrickLink or the LEGO Group.
Open-source software
- Blockly: the block editor.
- CodeMirror and Lezer: the Python editor, and reading Python back into blocks.
- MicroPython: running a program on a mat, in the browser.
- three.js: a LEGO® model in 3D.
- PDF.js: drawing a mat from its PDF.
- The Anthropic and OpenAI SDKs: the AI helper’s requests.
- Next.js and React: the pages.
The licence of each, and exactly what MatPilot uses from it, is in NOTICE. MatPilot itself is open source under the MIT License: its code on GitHub.
